How does it work in Oklahoma concerning when you must pay for tags for your vehicle?

Someone is telling me that their tags expired on December 31, 2006, but they have 30 days to get them replaced after it expired, but for everyday until they are replaced, they have to pay 25 cents. Does anyone know if that is true? I live in KS, and that is not how it is done at all, depending upon what letter your last name starts with is when you must renew them here. Is OK different? This person’s last name begins with a P. Are they lying?

A lot of people are confused by the law in Oklahoma, and think there is a 30 day grace period for tags.

When your tags expire, they are expired. If you drive on expired tags, you can get ticketed and perhaps have your vehicle towed.

But, it you pay for the new tags within 30 days after expiration, there is no monetary penalty.

I often have cars in the lots with expired tags, and of course they can’t get them out without current registration. Many people argue with me that I’m scamming them because Oklahoma has a 30 day grace period. I finally had the law printed off to hand to them.

Tags expire 12 months after you first register a vehicle when new, regardless of your last name.
