How Can We See Some Orcas In The San Juan Islands?

I seen some pictures on Google earth, and Flickr of the Orcas swimming right next to the shore, but we didnt see any? Do you have to go on a whale watching tour? We wanted to, but we were only there for 2 days! Is there a way to see them without taking a tour? I dont want a bunch of people screaming as soon as they see the whales!

The best month to see them is usually July, but there are no guarantees. The place where you probably have the best chance to see them from the shore is Lime Kiln Point State Park on San Juan Island.

The whale museum in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island is also fascinating.

Several whale watching companies are based out of Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. They use spotters from the air to locate the orcas and communicate with each other to give you the best chance of seeing them.

The boats are not extremely large and the operators keep a legal and respectful distance from the whales. Everyone on the boat is looking and helps to spot the whales. Usually people going out on the boats don’t scream –they are too busy taking photos or looking through their binoculars – they may just exclaim “Look – over there – there’s one!”

The boats stop and hold their position when they get as close as they are legally allowed, but sometimes the orcas choose to come closer and approach the boats. It isn’t uncommon for them to come very close and then dive under the boat at the last minute.
