questions about MLB terminology?

Personally, i think Papelbon is, not only one of the most underpaid player in this A-rod inflated wage era, he’s the best closer in the game. So it confused me to see him except such a low wage. what’s the deal.

espn reported…”The Boston Red Sox and closer Jonathan Papelbon agreed Thursday to a $775,000, one-year contract, nearly doubling his salary….Papelbon earned $425,550 last season, when he had 37 saves in 40 opportunities and a 1.85 ERA, then saved three of the four World Series games against Colorado. He hoped to get a multiyear deal but had no leverage…”

Is his stats from last year not leverage enough? What “leverage” do they mean?

Ive also read somewhere this is how things go as a player…low wage contract for three years until fourth year when he hits arbitration. When can a player request arbitration…or is it something that is stipulated in the contract?

According to the collective barganing agreement players are not arbitration eligible until they have more than 3 years service and are not free agency eligible until 6 years of service. Up until this a team owns a player rights and can pay you what they want (as long as it is above the league min.) Some teams get a jump on things to lock a player up they will offer multi yr deals near mkt value. This keeps the player happy and avaoids arbitration which can be costly to an organization both in money and goodwill with the player (Colorado and Touluwittsky for example(OK I can’t spell))
