what do you call these words: who what when where why how?
i dont want you to tell me they are called question words. i know that. but i thought there was an English grammar term for them. can you help me out?

They are called interrogative words when they are used in the beginning of a sentence to ask a question. “What are you doing in the garden?” Some are used as pronouns others or as other parts of speech.
