Why the night caps when going to sleep?

I just saw a black and white movie and thought about this before, why did men wear those night caps on there heads when they went to sleep? I think mainly in the years of the 20′s, 30′s and maybe 40′s.It’s those kind that look like what Santa wears. Maybe to keep there heads warm at night but how in the world would a cap like that stay on your head the whole night unless you didn’t change positions all night. Thanks.

to keep them warm at night (they didn’t have central heating) and protect from head lice.
