Australia began as a series of British colonies – they were under the direct rule of the British monarch, with a governor acting as his/her representative.
In 1901 all of these states combined to form the Commonwealth of Australia, a single nation. While Australia has its own parliament, the Monarch of England is still the head of state. His/her representative is the Governor-General of Australia.
Short answer: Australia’s monarch is the Queen of England, in fact some people refer to her as the Queen of Australia.
