What the different Between a regular fish tank filter Vs a Canister filter?

I have a 55 gall and i have about 10 to 15 fish and some live plant. I’m thinking of getting a Hagen Fluval 404 Cannister Filter Freshwater Saltwater but what is so good about this vs a regular fliter.

A canister filter sits below your tank and is a sealed system. A regular filter hangs on the back of the tank and is an open system.

Closed= sealed where water enters from a pick up tube goes through the filter then exits via an exit tube.
Open= enters through pick up tube goes through filter then dumps out over the top. and the system is not sealed.
