Homework question – word problem, can you help, please ?

Peter drove a distance of 189 miles. Part of the time he averaged 65 miles per hour, and for the remaining time, 55 miles per hour. The entire trip took three hours. How long did he travel at each rate?

The equations you should use are
65x+55y=189
x+y=3

Now solve for y, y=3-x
Plug (3-x) in for y, 65x+55(3-x)=189
You now get 65x+165-55x=189
You then get 10x+165=189
So 10x=24
x=2.4 y=3-2.4=0.6
Therefore, Peter drove at 65 mph for 2.4 hours and at 55 mph for 0.6 hours at 65 mph.
