How Page File Works

How do emails work their way around the internet?

When I press send on my email programme, how does the email message know where to go and how to get there?

I know how a web page works:
its sits on a web server and when I navigate to that page its HTML file gets sent to my computer

BUT, I would like to know how emails work.
