How did the Kwantung Army name came about?
After the Russo-Japanese War ended in 1905 Japan took control of the Kwantung Leased Territory and areas adjacent to the South Manchurian railroad in northern China. The Kwangtung Garrison was established to “protect” these places in 1906. In 1919 its name was changed to the Kwangtung Army.
