How do I become more “green”?

I’m 13 and I don’t know how to become green. I think that being green is really important. What I’m doing now is I’m using less paper and trying to walk places instead of having my mom drive but there is not really many places that I can walk to. Please tell me what I can do to become more green at home.

I really admire your concern to become more green.
There are not so many teens with your enthusiazm. There are many things you can do to become more “green”. I Think you are headed in the right direction.
First of all It is most important to have a total change in your thinking about the use, reuse and disposal of the resources that are available to you. This helps you to develop and maintain good habits which make it easier for you to live what I call a “green life style”.

Here are a number of things you can do whithin and around your home:

1)Make sure lights are turned off when they are not in use. This includes things like turning off your computer if not in use for more than 30 minutes, unpluging electrical appliances especially if you’re going to be away for an extended period of time.

2) Tell your folks to make sure your home air filter is cleaned or replaced once a month. This will not only ensure clean air but will always ensure that your heater or airconditioner is not over worked which will lead to using more energy than is necessary.

3) Attach a water purifyer to your water faucet at home instead of buying botteled water.

4). When you go to the grocery take a canvas bag with you or a convinient bag so you don’t have use the plastic bags at the grocery.

5) When you shower you can make use of a bucket intead of your shower so you can save water.

6) You can prepair a compost heap at your back yard which you can use to produce naturally made soil or organic maure (find out more about this at www.communityinitiativenow.com/_community )
