How did hawaii get its name?

another question is what is the nickname for hawaii and how did it get this nickname

The original Hawaiians came from Tahiti, and still share the same language. When those Polynesians migrated to a new, unpopulated island, they frequently named the new island they found “Hawaii” which as the other respondent said roughly translates to “our homeland”, although I suspect there are spiritual connotations not caught by just saying that. Local dialects have changed the pronunciation of certain letters, so “H” and “K” are interchangeable, and “H” in Hawaiian is from the “T” in Tahitian. The “W” in Hawaiian is interchangeable with “V”. “Tabu” in Tahitian is the word “Kapu” in Hawaiian.

So if you follow this, “Hawaii”, “Kauai”, and “Tahiti” are actually all the same word, just pronounced differently in different dialects.

The nickname “Sandwich Isles” came from the first European explorer to land on Hawaii, Caption Cook. He named it after a royal person in England, the Earl of Sandwich.
