How Develop Iphone Apps

How do people make buttons, icons and pictures etc. For their iPhone apps?

I am developing apps. I see that all apps on the app store have proffetional looking icons and pictures, buttons logos etc. How do they make them. What program for a mac can I make stuff like that with?
