How British People Talk

Has there ever been any talk about dismantling the British Royal family?
I have nothing against the monarchy and I’m not even from Britain. I’m just wondering if there has ever been a backlash against the Royal family. They seem quite popular, but couldn’t have always been, could they?
Has there ever been a time when it looked like the monarchy might have been gotten rid of? And if the British people ever did want it to be dismantled, how would that work? Would there be some kind of vote or something?
Thanks!
There has been a small, but extremely vocal minority against monarchy since the 17th century. Before that sometimes a sovereign was not well liked, but there were very people against the concept of monarchy.
————-
In 1649 the verbal war between the people and the sovereign became so intense that actual physical war broke out, known as the “English Civil War”. Many people died, and parliament eventually executed the king and declared a republic. The leader of the republic, Oliver Cromwell, didn’t act much different than a sovereign, and he led his country into repeated wars in Ireland. When Oliver died, his son became the leader of the republic (just like a monarchy), and the British people decided that they preferred a king. They restored the son of the executed king to power.

In the 18th century parliament determined that they had the power to overrule hereditary law and decide who (or more precisely who woud be the ancestor of future sovereigns) would be the future sovereign. This decision largely favored the preference of the English over the Scottish, and was the source of continued conflict for another half a century.
===============
Also in the 18th century the majority of the wealth of the sovereign in Britain was taken from his direct control. Although this must have seem devestating at the time, it saved the monarchy in the 19th and 20th centuries when most of the monarchies were destroyed. Because the king was just a wealthy person, but not the wealthiest person in the entire country, jealousy was at a minimum.
===============
In the 20th century the British people had grown comfortable enough with the monarchy that the majority favored keeping the institution. Most peple in the 21st century either outright favor the monarchy, or are at least indifferent, and they fear that a president may be not be any better or possibly a lot worse. Proponents of a republic have remained a minority,

However, many of the privelages of monarchy have been under steady attack for the last century. In particular, the monarch receives less vitriol than the royal family as a whole. If there is a popular position today, it is to keep the monarch, but remove most of the taxpayer funded benefits to the family of the monarch.
————————-
That said, there is a shameless popularity ranking of the monarchs. The Queen is extremely beloved by the majority of people, and her daughter, Anne is extremely popular. The Queen’s cousin Alexandra is also very popular, especially with older citizens and seen as classic elegance. Prince Edward and Prince Richard (the queen’s first cousins) are seen as old school upper crust and are fairly invisible to the young people. Prince Michael and his wife suffer from a very difficult image problem, compounded by Princess Michael’s uncanny ability to say very offensive things on television. Prince Andrew and Prince Edward have divided loyalties. Prince Philip also had divided loyalties, but is given more lattitude considering his age and upbringing and servce in WW2. The loyalty of his marriage to the Queen helps him a lot.
===============
The most important is Prince Charles as heir to the throne. His image has wildly fluctuated from horrible to admired. In many ways, at age 60 he is probably more popular than he has ever been in his whole life. He still has a powerful forces against him, but he should be readily accepted as King when his time comes.
===============
Personally, I think the trend will continue. The extended royal family will continue to lose privelages, but the monarchy will remain. I can’t honestly say if New Zealand, Canada, and Australia won’t become republics, but it would not be surprising. After over 5 decades as one of the best known and one of the most admired people in the world, it will be hard to see Elizabeth leave this world.
